“After working in several media, I finally discovered watercolor. The splendid colors and the transparency allowed me to succeed in my goal of depicting dramatic light on an object. Although my favorite subjects are figures, I am fascinated by and am actually painting, the light and its effect rather than the subject itself.”
- Carolyn
Growing up in Martinsville, Virginia, Carolyn drew any subject on any surface, driving her mother to distraction (and new rules about appropriate places that pencil marks belonged!). The cardboard from her father's folded shirts became the only place she was allowed to draw. Pencil was the medium of expression and release for Carolyn's need to record what she felt through drawing.
Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, provided Carolyn with a wonderful landscape of winter splendor. A paradise for a graphite artist. There, at Holland College, she studied commercial art and continued with her pencil drawing.
Virginia beckoned and Carolyn returned, moving to Richmond to settle down to a 9-5 job. Before beginning her work, however, she decided to visit a friend in Charleston, a city she had never seen. It was April. The city was resplendent with its mantle of flowers and Carolyn never returned to Richmond.
Deciding to learn about color, Carolyn took a course in watercolor from a famous local artist, Virginia Fouche Bolton, fully intending to move quickly into oils. It has been 28 years and watercolor is still her medim of choice. "Watercolor is my passion. I love its transluscence, fluidity, and the glowing color. You can never achieve the same vivid color in any other medium."
Carolyn is On the board of directors of South Carolina Watermedia, and a signature member of Watercolor USA(WHS), and SCWS. Her work has been featured in national publications such as Watercolor Magic and American Art Collector magazines and international ones as Kindred Spirit in Canada and CreArta in Australia. Winner of many awads, Carolyn's other passion is her family, a husband and three wonderful daughters.
